Last night we had out May meeting and had 10 people in attendance. It was a good turn-out as we return to the normal second Thursday of the month meetings: We discussed the following topics:

  • Presentation Topics Discussion –We had a thoughtful conversation designed to help define  future presentation subject matter the members would like to see.
  • Kickstart Your Future – Sam led a discussion on the use of crowdsourcing as a way of financing technical projects. He discussed the two contemporary sites, Kickstarter and IndieGoGo, as viable means to use when crowdsourcing. We also saw several projects such as the Pebble Watch  or the Printrbot which have done extraordinarily well using this technique.
  • Ubuntu 12.04  – the group  began looking at several different features of both the Unity and Gnome-Shell desktop environments that accompany the new 12.04 release of Ubuntu. We had a strange problem getting Unity to work properly with a projector. Part of the Unity information used Unity-2D for discussion. We were also running out of meeting time when this problem occurred so we had to cut some parts of this short..
  • Linux News – We had a discussion on recent Linux related news items such as the Apache Foundation release of OpenOffice 3.4, Rickard Stallman’s collapse at a conference in Barcelona, and New Hampshire’s bill HB418 which mandates the use of open Source and open file formats.
  • General Discussion – we had a general group discussion around the sad reality  that the Xinerama functionality in Xorg is becoming deprecated. Also had a very brief discussion on the use of Virtualbox for desktop virtualization.

We had a decent time and lots of discussion in spite of some of the challenges of the evening. Hope to see you all at the June meeting on 06/14.

Reference Notes:

During the course of the meeting Sam  discussed a few useful books when studying C programming. I’ve referenced these  books below:

Just a reminder to everyone that we will have our May Lug meeting at 6:30pm on Thursday, May 10th. Currently, the agenda is as follows:

  • Presentation Topics Discussion – Sam Williams
  • Kickstart Your Future – Sam Williams
  • Ubuntu 12.04  – Sam Williams
  • Linux News – Sam Williams

Hope to you all can come out and catch up.

Our April meeting was a little confusing because of a rare rescheduling that had to occur. We shouldn’t be deviating from the Second Thursday schedule too much in the future. The reschedule also caused our agenda to shift because of scheduling conflicts.

All in all we had a decent turn-out of around 11 people. We spent a bit of time sharing Arduino stories. We did this in lieu of a formal Arduino presentation.

  • We had a showing of the video documentary called: Arduino: The documentary
  • We also viewed the TedX talk by Eben Upton called: Raspberry Pi ( great breakdown on the Raspberry Pi project)
  • Discussed the many Open Source/Hardware initiatives and where they are leading technology
  • Discussed the Ubuntu 12.04 release candidate with brief demonstrations

It was a good meeting with a lot of lively and interesting discussion.

Meeting Reschedule notice. In April we are making a one time move to the third Thursday of the month because of a scheduling conflict!

Just a reminder to everyone that we will have our April Lug meeting at 6:30pm on the third Thursday, April 19th. Currently, the agenda is as follows:

  • Arduino Basics ( part 2)-  Brad Coxhead
  • tmux (part 2): a replacement for the screen utility – Sam Williams
  • Ubuntu 12.04 Release Candidate – a sneak peek – Sam Williams
  • Linux News – Sam Williams

Hope to you all can come out and catch up.

Our March meeting took place on our new meeting night, the second Thursday of the month. We are really starting to get into a groove with the new meeting night and location!Tonight we had 15 people in attendance. The meeting was divided into four presentation segments:

  • Arduino Basics (part 1) -  Brad Coxhead started his first in a series of many lectures on using the Open Hardware platform, Arduino. Brad described the basic tools and techniques used to work with the Arduino as well as provide an idea of what is come in his future lectures. The topics were  well received with many members expressing a serious interest.
  • Tmux (part 1) – Sam Williams provided an introduction to the use of the terminal multiplexer known as tmux. Sam presented many ways in which the tool could be used for practical workflows in a terminal based development or administrative environment. Sam will finish this topic next month with more configuration and details on leveraging the tool in a serious  production or development environment.
  • Ubuntu 12.04 beta 1 – Sam Williams provided a brief demonstration of the new beta of Precise Pangolin (Ubuntu 12.04). There are some very significant improvements, particularly in the area of Unity and the newly added HUD. Ubuntu 12.04 is still on schedule for a release on April 26th, 2012.
  • Linux News - Sam Williams also led the group with a brief discussion of a couple of major Linux news items.

The meeting went really well. Nice to see the momentum starting to build again!

Our February meeting took place on our new meeting night, the second Thursday of the month. The new venue at Rasmussen College is really working out well!

Tonight we had 15 people in attendance. The meeting was divided into three presentation segments:

  • Introductory Linux Topics: The first segment was devoted to discussing introductory Linux topics. We started with a list of questions and work through a majority if them. The audience also added questions through-out the entire evening.
  • Comparing the Unity and Gnome-Shell Desktop Environments: The second segment provided a comparison of Unity and Gnome-Shell on Ubuntu 11.10. There was a bit of discussion bringing the pros and cons of each to the forefront. Since Unity has few configuration options, the final part of the discussion dealt with configuring Gnome-Shell, particularly using the Gnome-Shell Extensions site. (http://extensions.gnome.org)
  • Embedded Programming with the Arduino: Brad Coxhead discussed a future set of lectures which he will start in March.   He will discuss and demonstrate the use of the Arduino platform for doing rudimentary embedded programming. It should be an interesting and fun set of lectures.  For those that are interested in participating with these hands-on lectures there will be a parts list posted on the LUG website.

The meetings have gotten off to a really good start in 2012 with more good things to come. Hope to see you all at the March meeting starting at 6:30pm on 03/08 (Thursday).

Hey Everyone! Just wanted to remind you all that the February LUG  meeting is set for Thursday, February 9th. The meeting will start promptly at 6:30pm and run until 9:30pm. We will meet in our new  location at Rasmussen College located at:

Rasmussen College
6000 East State Street (Chase Bank Building)
Fourth Floor rm 404

Note: Corner of State Street and Mulford

Hope to see you all there!

Happy New Year everyone!!

RRLug started off the new year  in a great new meeting area. We are now being sponsored by Rasmussen College. (Thanks PJ)  We had a total of 10 people attend the January  meeting. It was an awesome meeting because arrangements were last minute, and we still had an great turn-out. We even had a couple of people attend that hadn’t been to meetings in a number of years, including one that had moved to Tennessee and has now come back. Welcome back Derald!

Sam Williams gave an introduction to the open-source Arduino project. Explaining details about the project, the different boards, and a variety of other project details. He then proceeded to demonstrate how easy they are to program. By the end of the night we had gone over many of the  details of its programming IDE and language and created a  simple Morse code program to blink out SOS. The meeting went well and everyone seemed to have a really good time.

There will be more Arduino projects coming in future meetings. In the meantime, please planing on coming to the February meeting on February 10th @ 6:30pm. Look forward to seeing you there.
