Rock River Linux Users Group has been active in the Rockford Area for over five years. We were formed in 1998 because of a growing need and interest in being able to utilize the Linux Operating System in a widely growing area of diversity. Linux systems and applications have been used for simple web servers, controls for space shuttle experiments, and as the base operating system for building low-cost supercomputer applications, just to name a few.

Linux interest is growing the world over. Currently, many countries including France, Germany, Mexico, and England are looking to see where they can leverage the low-cost, high performance power that Linux returns to the desktop.  Commercial US companies such as IBM, HP, Sun, are selling systems to run Linux. When the Intel Itanium is released it will already have a 64 bit version of linux to use. These are just a few of the reasons to learn Linux. By the Way, did I mention that it is fun, too?

RRlug: A description.....

Rock River Linux Users Group is specifically focused on the teaching of Linux and Open Source technologies to those that are interested. Our membership is very diverse, ranging from those that have never used a computer before to those that have been using and programming for years. The membership ranges in age from 13 to 72. Our meeting structure is normally formal enough to get the meetings headed in an orderly fashion, but not so orderly that we will discuss past meeting minutes, budgets, or the normal things that discourage people from participating in Users Group.

During a declining economy there are four major reasons to join RRLug.
